Long-Term Investing Series

Today's Topic: Momentum Investing

Momentum investing is based on a simple belief:

Stocks that are already performing well may continue rising, while weak-performing stocks may continue falling for some time.

Unlike value investing, this strategy focuses primarily on price movement, not on company fundamentals.

How Momentum Investing Works

  • Buy stocks showing strong upward momentum.
  • Continue holding them while the trend remains intact.
  • Exit when the momentum weakens.

Key Characteristics

  • Reviews can be monthly, quarterly, or based on a predefined rule.
  • Portfolio size varies depending on the investor's approach.
  • Can involve more frequent buying and selling than traditional long-term investing.
  • Widely used by both long-term investors and short-term traders.

Featured Finance Question

What is the PEG Ratio and how is it calculated?

The PEG Ratio (Price-to-Earnings Growth Ratio) is a valuation metric that combines a company's PE Ratio with its earnings growth rate.

Step 1: Calculate the PE Ratio

Step 2: Calculate the PEG Ratio

How Investors Interpret It

  • Around 1 is generally considered fairly valued.
  • Below 1 may indicate undervaluation.
  • Above 1 may indicate higher valuation.

However, these are guidelines rather than strict rules, and the PEG Ratio should always be used alongside other financial metrics.
